The six-and-a-half-minute video from Duke University, link below, makes me reminisce my experience with a young server at an Indian Restaurant in my neighborhood. Last week, Cindy and I tried to find a quiet place to enjoy dinner. We brought wine to our neighborhood Indian restaurant. A young server with excellent manners came to serve us. He was still new at the restaurant. When we asked him to uncork the wine, he tried to twist it off. I told him that he needed a corkscrew to open it. He returned and left two glasses and a corkscrew on our table to do it ourselves. After the dinner, he handed us a check. Cindy said he looked like us when we first came to this country and advised me to be generous with the tip. She said this young gentleman reminded her of her after school work as a waitress at a high-end restaurant on Union Street in San Francisco when she moved here from Olympia, Washington, in 1981. Cindy carried two cocktails on a tray to serve two lady diners. Without proper training, she stumbled forward and spilled them on a diner. The restaurant owner came out to apologize profusely and offered to pay for to replace her beautiful dress. The diner, not only did not accept it, she also told Cindy not to worry about it. She let it go.

This act of kindness proved to us that the vast majority of Americans are open-minded, kind, and extremely kind.

Many of us stumble from time to time and start from almost nothing. After serving as an after school waitress, my wife successfully moved on to work for the federal government for over 30 years until her retirement.

When I watched the video below, I thanked my management team, especially Darryl and Chris, and their colleagues at our Tucker facility for representing us and exemplifying our core values well. They have demonstrated that when we have job openings, we reach out to all job applicants regardless of who they are and where they are from, born here or aboard. They showed that we value diversity and we are a diverse organization.
